Hydrogeological Investigation: Former Chrome Plating Facility

Spills and leakage from a former chrome plating facility resulted in a chromium plume that spanned three properties, including municipally and provincially owned land. Previous consultants had conducted environmental investigation and remediation, but residual soil and groundwater contamination were present.

NEXT reviewed environmental data from the previous investigations dating back to the early 1990s. The data was compared to current standards, taking into account the extensive Omnibus changes to the CSR in 2017.

We obtained permission to drill and conduct hydrogeological investigation off-site in order to complete the Detailed Site Investigation. Drilling took place in an area developed with light rail tracks, using a crane to lift and set the drill rig into place. This required approval of a project-specific health and safety plan by the light rail operators.

Following the DSI, we conducted a Detailed Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment and successfully obtained three Certificates of Compliance for the site and off-site affected parcels.
