For this major Brownfield re-development project, we were commissioned to navigate the many challenges of dealing with the site of a former tungsten carbide facility. A previous Certificate of Compliance had been deemed invalid and a new one was required to meet current Ministry environmental standards. Significant areas of contamination had been missed during previous environmental site assessments, and there was also contamination migrating from the property onto neighbouring industrial parcels. To add to these challenges, we were under a time crunch because the City required a large strip of the land for construction of an overpass.
We had to work quickly and efficiently for this demanding remediation project, which involved environmental risk assessment, design, construction, installation, and some intense negotiating with 25 off-site property owners and the Ministry of Environment. We also managed the design and installation of a major hydraulic barrier to cut off contamination migration, a groundwater treatment system and a permanent contaminated materials storage facility.
Our work resulted in acquiring all necessary permits for constructing the overpass and a major distribution warehouse. We were also able to help our client recover costs for the migrating contamination.
